Site where the first missionary nuns set foot - the heroines in the history of Christianity in Korea

The missionaries came to Joseon through Jemulpo Port, as soon as it opened. At the request of Bishop Blanc (Joannes Marie), who was the 7th bishop in Joseon, four nuns from the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres arrived at Incheon Port in July 1888. The nuns, 2 French and 2 Chinese, served in the ministry of the Joseon churches. In celebration of the 120th anniversary of the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres in Korea, a monument was built on July 22, 2007 in the flower garden next to the main gate of Incheon Jungbu Police Station. This monument was built exactly where the nuns first set foot in Incheon. The monument depicts the four nuns who first started their missionary work in Joseon, the ‘land of martyrdom,’ when they arrived at Jemulpo Port on July 22, 1888. These nuns who crossed the open sea and came to unfamiliar land are definitely the heroines in the missionary history of Christianity in Korea.

Memorial Chapel for the Martyrs of Jemuljindoo – Beginning of the Byeongin Persecution

There is a building barely seen on the left side of the Korean-Chinese Cultural Center, the landmark of Chinatown. This building is the ‘Memorial Chapel for the Martyrs of Jemuljindoo.’ This chapel, built in June 2014, is in the shape of two praying hands. This place, Sun-jib Park, is known to be where the public execution of the descendants of Seung-Hoon Lee, St. Peter, Peter’s maternal family, and some Catholic believers, took place. This memorial chapel was built to commemorate the 10 martyrs who died at the Byeongin Persecution in 1868 and 1871.

Haean Catholic Church

Haean Catholic Church – Church built for Chinese citizens living in Incheon

It is a Catholic church built in 1958 for Chinese citizens living in Incheon. Its original name was Seollin Catholic Church for the Chinese people, but as the number of believers decreased upon their return to China in the 1970s, it became a Catholic church for the general public in 1972. This was, then, called, ‘Haean Catholic Church.’ The educational hall located in front of the church was for Siheyuan, a residence for Chinese people. However, it was later sold to a private owner.

Naedong Anglican Church – The first Anglican church in Korea

A British Naval Chaplain, Bishop Charles Corfe and Medical Missionary Eli Barr Landis, arrived in Jemulpo in 1890 for missionary and medical activities. They established the Church of St. Michael in 1891; however, it was damaged during the Korean War. It was then moved to the St. Lukes Hospital site (presently, the Naedong Anglican Church). This church was established to commemorate the British fallen soldiers during the Korean War; bereaved families donated this church. In recognition of its historical value, it was designated as Tangible Cultural Property of Incheon Metropolitan City No. 51.

Dapdong Cathedral

Dapdong Cathedral – A grand cathedral

Dapdong Cathedral was first built as the Jemulpo Catholic Church in 1889 by the priest, Wilhelm. J, of the Paris Foreign Missions Society. The red brick building, standing in its place nowadays, was built in the Romanesque style in June 1937. In recognition of its historical significance as the oldest western style modern architecture, it was designated as Private Monument No. 827 on September 25, 1981.
The first Priest of Dapdong Cathedral, Wilhelm. J., baptized Patriot Jung-geun Ahn and visited Ahn in Lushun Prison in March 1910. At that time, he talked about permanent peace in Asia and wished eternal life for Patriot Ahn. The unity and peace between east and west were not considered difficult by them.

Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres –The origin of an orphanage in Korea

Typhoid fever occurred in Incheon Port. Thus, the priest, Joseph Maraval, suggested that an orphanage be established. With the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres in the Dapdong Cathedral, it was established in 1894, wherein, the nuns treated the diseases of patients and prescribed the appropriate medicine. They visited houses to offer medical service and took care of abandoned children. This was the origin of the Star of the Sea Children’s Home, the first orphanage in Korea.
In the beginning, the convent was a three-story brick building that could accommodate 20 nuns. However, it was destroyed during the Korean War. In 1952, it was reconstructed into a two-story building with support from the U.S. Army.
