Must-See No.1- Wolmido Island: Peace Trees in Wolmi Park, Green Beach (Incheon Landing Operation)

Wolmido Island is the site of the Incheon Landing Operation, Wolmi Traditional Park, and the Wolmi Culture Street, where Jung-jae Lee, the hero of the film ‘Operation Chromite,’ had a ‘guerrilla’ interview in advance of its movie premier. In the park are found the Peace Trees, which blocked the cannon shots during the Incheon Landing Operation. Out of these, were seven trees, designated to be Peace Trees These trees are more than 70 years old, including gingko and zelkova trees, which are believed to be 245 years old. The remnants of the cannon shots are still seen on the trees.

In order to commemorate the historical significance of the Incheon Landing Operation and share the story of peace, signs made of stone were installed at the Green, Blue, and Red Beaches. Green Beach is where the first landing occurred during the Incheon Landing Operation.

This was built to commemorate the sacrifice of the soldiers who participated in the Korean War, as well as, the landing operation that turned the war situation in our favor. It is composed of 2 indoor exhibition halls and 1 outdoor exhibition hall on weapons, military uniform, media, etc.

Must See No. 4 - Palmido Island: Palmi Lighthouse

Palmido Island was a military reservation district so public access was prohibited. It was publicly opened in 2009 and, since this has been close to the public for a long time, it is a source of pride for Incheon because of its clean environment. However, the time of stay on the island is limited from 1 to 3 hours. It takes about 1 hour from Yeonan Pier via ferry.

The Palmi Lighthouse was established here in 1903 and operated until 2003. It is the first modern lighthouse in Korea and the key that led to the success of the Incheon Landing Operation. A day before the landing operation, the Korean Liaison Office of General MacArthur’s Headquarters had to sneak into Wolmido Island to ensure its successful operation. For this, they occupied the lighthouse of Palmido Island that lit the passage toward Incheon Port. With this occupation, the U.N. Forces that was placed on the defensive was able to get the key to victory. That’s why this place is historically significant.

On July 30th, a music concert in celebration of the movie premier was held in the Millennium Square of Palmido Island.

Yeongheungdo Island can be accessed by driving a car. A monument related to the Incheon Landing Operation may be seen if you cross Yeongheunggyo Bridge on Seonjaedo Island. Driving along you will see the monument on your left.

Ahead of Incheon landing, it was necessary to occupy Palmido Island, Deokjeokdo Island, and Yeongheungdo Island because at that time, the North Korean Army occupied Yeongheungdo Island. Thanks to the efforts of the Navy and Youth Defense Corps, Yeongheungdo Island was retaken. To commemorate this accomplishment of participating in re-occupying the island, a monument was established.
